"What art offers is space- a certain breathing room for the spirit."
John Updike
In September of 2011 Healing Icons kickstarted this innovate new program, by holding an all day workshop at the Columbia Musuem of Art. Dr. Sharon Bray co-led with our own, Heidi Darr-Hope. Sharon is the author of two extraordinary books and innovator of Writing Through Cancer an expressive writing program at Stanford and Scripts Cancer Centers in California. Her blog is a constant source of inspiration.
Living Legacies pairs cancer patients from different cities, states and perhaps even countries using the visual arts and creative writing to begin an extraordinary conversation about what it is like to live with cancer. The resulting visual and written conversations will be exhibited and eventually published in book form.

Student Comments and Reflections
"My idea of art changed - I realizedart is not just about being about to draw or paint somethig realistically, but it is more about a language. I learned to trust the process and just let the inside come out, whatever it is."
"Wow! That “my name” and the word “art” can be in the same sentence - I feel privileged."
"These classes gave me more purposeful direction for my journey of healing and greater insight into myself."
